The data-driven liberty cap field guide

They’re a member of the genus Psilocybe and are in the ‌Strophariaceae family. The cultivated fruit bodies of liberty caps have an average of 1.12% psilocybin, no psilocin, and .21% baeocystin (a naturally occurring psychoactive compound) (1). In fact, by percentage of dry weight, they are more potent than psilocybe cubensis, which is one of the most commonly cultivated magic mushrooms. These little shrooms are thought to be the most common naturally growing magic mushrooms in the world. Not only that; despite their modest size when compared to their other Psilocybe siblings, they rank as the 3rd most psychedelically potent.

To ensure that the shrooms last as long as possible, you want to make certain that no moisture enters the jar or sweats out from within the mushrooms. Don’t wash them with water; this could encourage mold growth and lengthen the drying process. Instead, use a small dry artist’s paintbrush to brush off any dirt, debris, or small bugs from the mushrooms. Remember, you can’t identify liberty caps on any one feature. The Liberty Cap mushroom has a slender stem that is yellowish-brown in color. The heights of these mushrooms range between 1 3/4″ and five 1/2″.

  1. We recommend planning routes through multiple locations which you can quickly scout before deciding whether to linger for a more forensic examination.
  2. The stem is also fairly flexible; if you apply light pressure it should spring back rather than snap in two.
  3. Many people have tried to domestic this magic mushroom without success.

Psilocybe semilanceata can be identified explicitly from psilocybe strictipes because they lack papilla. The Liberty Cap fungus thrives in high humidity and dies when it’s too cold. They usually produce fruit during autumn and die in the winter. On the other hand, it has increased in warmer climates like Texas and Florida from September to December.

We have learned which mushrooms are poisonous or not poisonous through the experiences of the unfortunate. You shouldn’t rely on any single characteristic to identify them. For example, the liberty cap is famous for its nipple but this is not a unique feature. living with an alcoholic: tips for life with alcohol use disorder The stem is ivory to pale brown and often darker towards the base. It is around 4-10cm long, 1-3mm thick and usually slightly wavy rather than completely straight. The surface is smooth but if you look closely you will see it is made up of fibres.

In that case, one particularly intriguing mushroom stands out—the liberty cap mushroom. This mushroom is touted for its unique psychoactive properties. It has been used for centuries by various cultures in spiritual ceremonies and therapeutic practices. Like Psilocybe cubensis, Liberty Caps grow in fields and pastures, but prefer the cold of temperate climates.

Dangers of Magic Mushrooms

A mushroom identification chart can be handy in the field, or try using one of the many mushroom identification apps in the App Stores, such as Wild Edibles or iNaturalist. It is nearly impossible to truly gauge the exact amount of psilocybin you are ingesting when munching on dried magic mushrooms or sipping on Liberty Cap-infused teas. My analysis confirmed that liberty caps do indeed prefer rich and acidic grassland (up to a point).

Luckily, there is detailed documentation of the subsequent involuntary psychedelic trip the family experienced. They all suffered from “vertigo” and in varying levels, compulsive laughter and dilated pupils. It’s safe to assume the father (who’s trip made him believe he was dying) thought twice before hunting for wild mushrooms again. But you can see it’s shaped more like a hemisphere than a cone or bell – hemispherical liberty caps are rare. We’re confident the locations on our map are the best place to start if you don’t already know of any spots in your area (we use them ourselves!). However, there is a degree of uncertainty involved and we cannot guarantee that liberty caps are present at every single location.

What’s the Dose of Psilocybe semilanceata Mushrooms?

The color of these caps is affected by the moisture level around them. This property is called hygrophanous (having a change in color due to changes in moisture). The dark brown color of these bite-sized delicacies is often a sign that they’re hallucinogens effects, addiction potential and treatment options dried, but sometimes they take on a lighter chestnut shade when moist. It can be rather difficult to identify mushrooms that you have picked from the wild. There are many different types of magic mushrooms aside from the Liberty Cap.

Typical Magic Mushroom Dose

Lookalikes of the liberty caps are not always safe, as seen by the Pholiota Rugosa. It is extraordinarily edible and poisonous mushrooms that mimic the shape and color of liberty caps. Some differences between the Amanita Muscaria and the P Semilanceata include a ring zone on the stem and rusty brown spores. Like the Psilocybe Semilanceata, Pholiotina Rugosa too is hygrophanous. There are many countries in which these psilocybe species native are found, with a wide distribution in Europe, where they are considered endemic.

Fascinatingly, (and enjoyably for us), there is a written record of people experiencing they mystery shroom’s potent psychedelic properties long before it had been catalogued. In 1799 a man went foraging in London’s Green Park for mushrooms to feed his family. The mushrooms in question happened to be, of course, Psilocybe semilanceata. The mushroom grows in grassland habitats, especially wetter areas. But unlike P. cubensis, the fungus does not grow directly on dung; rather, it is a saprobic species that feeds off decaying grass roots.

This can lower the effect of the mushroom’s psychedelic properties. The more food you digest with the mushrooms, the more it will affect the way that the edibles are metabolized in your system. More common in fields, moors and grassland where animals are grazed but can be found in lawns and in parks. The gills start light grey/black, are mottled and have a lighter edge but become very dark purple/black as the spores are released. You can use Magic Mushroom Map to identify when weather conditions are suitable. I was delighted to find a dataset with thousands of crowdsourced liberty cap records – each with a date and coordinates.
